“It’s easy sometimes to forget the simple things that give us pleasure. If we open our eyes, life is marvelous. The human spirit triumphs, if only for moments in a day. I try to have my work call attention to those moments.” – Seward Johnson
Grounds for Sculpture is a beautiful sculpture garden located in Hamilton, NJ. This is a great place to walk around. Created in 1992, this place has continued to capture the hearts of nature lovers and art lovers, alike. Who says the two are mutually exclusive?
Check out some of the reasons why should make this your next daytrip in New Jersey.
1. It’s like being on your own personal scavenger hunt.
The sculptures here are amazing, but what makes this place so interesting is that some of them are hidden down little trails off of the main walkways. You have to explore a little if you want to see it all. Every time I come here, I feel like I’m finding something clandestine and sacred. Sometimes, it feels as if you’ve stumbled across something you weren’t even supposed to see…..
Of course, there is a map that you will receive at the check-in booth, but I tend to like to wander and discover things on my own. It’s all part of the fun!
2. There is always something new to see!
While there are many permanent sculptures, some of the art and exhibits in the indoor galleries are updated frequently. When you visit, be sure to check out the indoor exhibit in the new Welcome Center (gift shop also located here) called That’s Worth Celebrating: The Life and Work of the Johnson Family. Grounds for Sculpture was the brainchild of Seward Johnson and this exhibit showcases the Johnson family’s contributions to the garden and the art scene over the years.
Also, check out groundsforsculpture.org. There may be an interesting event or a notification of a new exhibit listed on their site!
3. The Sculpture Garden at Night
It feels like the sculpture garden becomes more alive at night. Don’t get me wrong, it is also amazing during the day, but nighttime makes it so much more magical! You will feel like you’ve stepped into Wonderland!
Currently, Grounds for Sculpture is open till 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Bonus: If you purchase timed tickets online for a time slot of 5 pm or later, you only pay $12 (online timed tickets are $16 before 5pm).
